Sometime in 1996, when Starbucks expanded into new territories and arrived in NYC, entrepreneur and native New Yorker Mesh Gelman became fascinated by the cosmopolitan people standing in line with him as they waited for their morning cup of coffee.
He observed that for some reason, this drink experience was so powerful it was changing people's daily routines. As time passed, he became more deeply entranced by the emotional and psychological elements of the coffee experience. It was transcending barriers and becoming a touchpoint for important moments throughout the day.
This magnetism with coffee's potential was more than a passing interest: it fueled Mesh, and eventually, he joined Starbucks' executive team, where he could observe firsthand the universal capability of coffee to cross boundaries, nurture, and inspire. It was here, too, that he noticed people were starting to prefer their coffee cold.
Many coffee shops quickly reacted to the cold wave, but unlike with hot coffee, they missed the attention to detail and craft that defined them. As it became clear that even more people were choosing cold, Mesh realized something else was missing, too. There had been so much fantastic innovation to bring different premium experiences into people’s homes, yet the coffee people craved, premium cold coffee, was still impossible to achieve in the home environment.
Delving into the idea that something significant was missing, after years of concept-testing and development, the Cumulus Coffee Company was born.
